Plate Heat Exchangers (PHE): types, cleaning, repair and overhaul

A plate heat exchanger, also known as a Plate Heat Exchanger (PHE), is used to efficiently transfer heat from one medium to another. A plate pack consisting of multiple thin plates provides a large heat transfer surface while keeping the different circuits separated.

Over time, contamination, deposits and other fouling can reduce heat transfer efficiency. Gaskets can also wear or become damaged. This can result in reduced performance, increased pressure drop, leakage or eventually unplanned downtime.

Blue Orange specialises in the inspection, cleaning, repair and overhaul of plate heat exchangers for marine and industrial applications. From commonly used PHEs to older and less common types, we assess their condition and determine which work is required to restore reliable performance.

What is a plate heat exchanger?

A plate heat exchanger consists of a pack of thin metal plates through which different media flow. Heat is transferred through the plates without the two circuits coming into direct contact.

The large heat transfer surface allows a PHE to transfer a significant amount of heat within a relatively compact design. Its actual performance, however, depends on factors such as the condition of the plates, flow characteristics and, in gasketed units, the condition of the gaskets.

Contamination or damage can therefore directly affect the performance of the heat exchanger.

When does a plate heat exchanger require maintenance?

A PHE does not have to fail completely before maintenance becomes necessary. Changes in performance can already indicate that inspection or cleaning is required.

Possible signs include:

  • reduced cooling or heating capacity;
  • increasing temperatures;
  • increasing pressure drop;
  • reduced flow;
  • external leakage;
  • mixing of the two media;
  • contaminated or corroded plates;
  • worn, deformed or damaged gaskets.

The exact cause is not always visible from the outside. By opening and inspecting the plate heat exchanger, it can be determined what work is actually required.

Plate heat exchanger cleaning, repair and overhaul

The correct approach depends on the type of plate heat exchanger, the materials, the contamination and the overall technical condition.

At Blue Orange, the PHE is inspected and, where required, completely dismantled. Depending on the findings, the work can include cleaning the plates, removing old gasket residues, replacing gaskets, carrying out repairs and pressure testing the heat exchanger.

After cleaning, the plates are inspected again. This not only removes visible contamination but also makes it possible to identify damage or deterioration hidden underneath the deposits.

The plate heat exchanger is then rebuilt in the correct configuration and tested before being returned to service.

Plate heat exchanger brands and types

Blue Orange works brand-independently. Our technical and service archive includes a wide range of Plate Heat Exchanger brands and models.

Below is an overview of known manufacturers, versions and PHE types.

Is your plate heat exchanger not listed?

The overview above is based on brands and types that appear in our technical and service archive. This does not mean that our capabilities are limited to these PHEs.

Blue Orange works brand-independently and can inspect, clean, repair and overhaul a wide range of plate heat exchangers.

Send us the manufacturer, model, serial number or available technical information. Our specialists can then determine the most suitable approach for your heat exchanger.

For urgent issues, Blue Orange is available 24/7.

How can we help YOU?

Briefly describe your situation, and we will contact you soon.

Prevent a small leak from causing downtime

Gaskets are essential to both the sealing and flow pattern of a plate heat exchanger. Over time, temperature, pressure, process media and natural ageing cause them to lose their elasticity and reliability.

However, leakage does not automatically mean that only the gaskets need to be replaced. The plates, gasket grooves, plate sequence and compression of the plate pack must also be checked.

Blue Orange therefore cleans and inspects the complete plate pack, replaces damaged components where necessary and tests the heat exchanger after assembly.

Is your plate heat exchanger leaking, or are you unsure about the condition of its gaskets? Have the plate pack assessed in time, before a small leak results in unplanned downtime.

PHE stands for Plate Heat Exchanger. The abbreviation is commonly used within marine and industrial applications.

A plate heat exchanger consists of multiple thin plates that together create a large heat transfer surface. Different media flow on opposite sides of the plates, allowing heat to be transferred without the media mixing.

Yes. The appropriate cleaning method depends on the PHE type, materials and type of contamination. With gasketed plate heat exchangers, the plate pack can be opened so the individual plates can be cleaned and inspected.

Gaskets can deteriorate due to operating time, temperature, pressure and ageing. Leakage is a clear indication, but preventive maintenance can also reveal that replacement is advisable. During an overhaul, both the plates and gaskets are therefore inspected.

This depends on the type of heat exchanger and the nature of the damage. After dismantling and cleaning, the technical condition can be assessed more accurately. Based on the findings, it can be determined whether cleaning is sufficient or whether repairs, replacement parts or further overhaul are required.

This depends on the situation, the heat exchanger design and the available maintenance window. The workshop usually provides the best conditions for extensive dismantling, cleaning, inspection and testing. When required, however, work can also be carried out on site.

Need Help with Heat Exchanger Refurbishment?

Not sure whether your heat exchanger requires refurbishment? Or would you rather address a developing issue before it leads to unplanned downtime?

At Blue Orange, we combine practical experience with technical expertise. We provide inspections, technical advice and refurbishment solutions tailored to marine heat exchangers, your installation and your maintenance schedule. No one-size-fits-all approach—just clear recommendations based on the actual condition of your equipment.

Feel free to contact us to discuss the condition of your heat exchanger. Together, we’ll determine the most suitable solution to keep your cooling system operating reliably—both now and in the long term.
